Video: ECU-tuned BMW M135i vs. stock M140i

The team over at RaceChip decided to find out whether they could boost the BMW M135i xDrive (F40) beyond the power level of its superior, the M140i (F20), using only software means. Let us see how they fared.

The task is more difficult than it sounds, because the M135i comes equipped with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine rated at 306 hp (228 kW) and 450 Nm (332 lb-ft) of torque. In contrast, the M140i packs an inline-six mill capable of 340 hp (254 kW) and 500 Nm (369 lb-ft). Furthermore, when put to the dyno test, the former shows roughly the same numbers as advertised, whereas the latter outshines them by a significant amount. In fact, RaceChip found their copy of the M140i capable of 366 hp (273 kW) and 522 Nm (385 lb-ft) when measured.

After installing the RaceChip GTS Black on the M135i and setting it up for maximum efficiency, the team was able to squeeze 337 hp (251 kW) and 492 Nm (363 lb-ft) of torque out of its four-banger. As you can see, the result fell somewhat short of the expectations. Despite this, the tuner has made a video where it conducted a series of tests comparing the sound and acceleration performance of the two Bavarians. Watch the video, it is worth it!
