Reports are coming in that BMW has not yet decided on the fate of its front-wheel-drive vehicle lineup: the current generation might as well become the last.
The cars available right now should remain on sale for another four or five years, a company representative explains. The next generation will have to be Euro-7 compliant, which will necessitate redesigning their internal combustion engines and integrating them into plug-in hybrid powertrains. Higher-end cars may be able to pull it off thanks to their high added value, but 1-Series and 2-Series may end up discontinued altogether.
The X1 and X2 SUVs will probably stay around for longer thanks to their popularity worldwide. As for the 1-Series hatchback, sedan and compact van models available in Europe right now, they will probably retire for good when the time comes for the Euro-7.
The latest 2-Series incorporates a Gran Coupe. a few UKL front-wheel-drive vans and a rear-wheel-drive coupe based on a shortened 4-Series platform. It is unlikely to fall victim to the lineup optimization, but we will have to wait until an official confirmation to know for sure.
