Marvel at this 29-year-old BMW M8 (E31) concept

Last weekend, BMW Blog posted a video featuring a unique prototype vehicle called the BMW M8 (E31). The car emerged in 1990 as a test mule and came equipped with a formidable 6.1L V12 engine rated at 550 hp (410 kW) and 550 Nm (406 pound-feet) of torque.

The German car manufacturer had initially considered mass-releasing the luxury convertible in the early 1990s, but the project turned out too expensive, and the car has never left the prototype phase.

The unique vehicle utilized the chassis of the 1989 BMW 850i Grand Tourer (E31). It remains unclear just how many prototypes existed (some say one, while other claim three) and whether BMW wanted the car to produce 550 or 600 horsepower. One way or the other, this speculation is rather irrelevant, as the only mass-produced car that utilized at least some part of the BMW M8 (E31) tech was the BMW 850csi. It entered the market packing a 5.6L V12 engine rated at 380 hp (283 kW) and 550 Nm (406 lbft) of torque.
