A BMW 2 Series coupe duo spotted testing

BMW continues polishing its new 2 Series Coupe, which remains true to its rear-wheel drive design while the 4-Door Coupe and the compact MPV both switch to FWD.

This becomes possible thanks to the new CLAR platform the 2 Series Coupe receives from its senior siblings. Rumor has it that the model will primarily ship with petrol engines: a 2.0-liter I4 and a 3.0-liter I6.

The two prototypes depicted on the spy shots here sport different exhaust systems: one has a single round tailpipe and the other one flaunts dual trapezoid tips. Curiously enough, there is a CLAR-based Toyota Supra accompanying the duo on the track for some reason.

The BMW 2 Series Coupe should celebrate its launch next year and be produced in Mexico. The M2 line will also switch generations later – and likely get the dialed-down turbo-six engine of the X3 M and X4 M along the way. The range-topping M2 CS, while not announced yet, is also a distinct possibility.
