BMW debunks ‘2 Series MPV discontinued’ rumor with new tests

As you are probably aware, rumors have been abundant lately that BMW intended to trim down its product range even more substantially than officially announced. Among other things, sources mentioned the 2 Series Active Tourer and its seven-seat sibling, the Gran Tourer, among the casualties. As it turns out, those rumors were false.

The next generation of the Active Tourer has been discovered during road tests. As you can see, the five-seat MPV has retained its overall features while gaining subtle improvements in places. The small window in the a-pillar is gone, the front door windows now consist of two sections, the side mirrors are doorframe-mounted, and the headlights are longer and narrower.

The current-gen BMW Active Tourer has been around since 2014, and the Gran Tourer seven-seater since 2015. In 2018, both MPVs received a mid-generational refresh.

In its current implementation, the series makes use of 1.5-liter and 2.0-liter gasoline and diesel engines, as well as a hybrid powertrain based on a 1.5-liter, three-cylinder engine. The drive can be FWD or AWD, and transmission choices include manual, automatic, and DCT. The successor model can be expected to inherit the entire range; while unlikely, it might get a performance version called the M235i xDrive, which would come powered by two liters of displacement, 306 hp / 228 kW, and 450 Nm / 332 lb-ft of torque.

As far as can be seen, the newcomer utilizes the latest version of the UKL2 platform. The cabin tech will likely get the largest update, including new safety systems and electronic aids, a reversing assistant, a voice assistant, and much more.

The next-gen BMW 2 Series Active Tourer will most likely premiere next year and go on sale in 2021.
