BMW has conducted a series of tests dedicated to comparing how different kinds of tires perform when installed on the same cars.
The test scope encompasses summer tires, winter friction tires, winter studded tires, and semi-sleek sport tires. Test pilots have tried starting and accelerating from various types of surfaces, and acceleration and braking paths were meticulously measured in each case. In addition to the above, steering performance was assessed on snow and asphalt.
The results were anything but unexpected. BMW came to the conclusion that it always made sense to use a specific tire set for specific weather conditions, without exception. A car clad in summer rubber couldn’t even get moving on snow, for example.
The video looks quite interesting and insightful despite the obvious findings. First, it is aesthetically beautiful. Second, it provides a clear visual demonstration of just how poorly tires can perform if chosen incorrectly. In any case, if you have any stubborn friends who still don’t see the merits of tire-swapping, we would suggest sending them a link to this video.
