BMW will unveil two mild-hybrid variants of its 3 Series at the GIMS 2020: the M340d xDrive and the 330e Touring. Let us see what it means in terms of performance.
The M340d xDrive Sedan and Touring pack the same powertrain as the recently unveiled X5/X6 xDrive40d duo: an I6 3.0 TDI with 340 hp (254 kW) and 700 Nm (516 lb-ft) assisted by a 48V starter-generator contributing another 11 hp (8 kW) along with a substantial amount of torque during acceleration. The Sedan sprints 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in 4.6 seconds and consumes 5.5 liters of fuel on average per 100 kilometers traveled (UK: 51.3 MPG; USA: 42.7 MPG). The Touring needs 4.8 s for the sprint and consumes 5.6l / 100 km (UK: 50 MPG; USA: 41.6 MPG). The transmission is eight-speed automatic and AWD is permanent in both versions.
The new M340d xDrive will get the M Sport package when the sales launch in April. The package will include performance brakes, tweaked suspension and steering, a new exhaust system, wheels available in 18 and 19 inches, a differential, and a custom interior trim.
For its own part, the BMW 330e Touring will get the 184hp (137kW), 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine of the 300e Sedan (shown in the video). A single electric motor integrated into the eight-speed auto gearbox will add another 113 hp (84 kW). The resulting output will be clamped down to 252 hp (188 kW) in normal conditions, but you will be able to use the XtraBoost feature to temporarily bolster the output to 292 hp (218 kW).
The BMW 330e Touring will be available in RWD and AWD variants, sprint 0-100 km/h in around six seconds, and consume between 1.6 and 2 liters of gasoline per 100 kilometers, which means up to 176 MPG in Great Britain or 147 MPG in the USA. All-electric range will vary between 55 and 68 kilometers (34 and 42 miles) depending on the body style and drive type.
