Stretched BMW 3 Series spied testing in Europe

The BMW 3 Series range already contains a few plug-in hybrids, and, judging by the latest spy photos, the company is thinking about releasing an all-electric version as well.

While we have seen battery-powered 3 Series test mules before, this is the first time a long-wheelbase version shows up with the same powertrain. As of right now, BMW only offers this version in China. Could it be an attempt to squeeze more batteries under the floor?

Aside from the wheelbase length, the freshly spotted prototype has different headlights and a disguised front bumper. The latter element might end up stylized to emphasize the all-electric nature of the car or otherwise to look like the faux grille of the i4 EV.

We don’t know for certain what model name the newcomer will get or what engines it will ship with. If it shares all the tech with the i4, then the top spec should be capable of 544 PS (536 hp / 400 kW), delivered by dual electric motors to all four wheels.

However it is, the electric 3 Series should debut next year, simultaneously with a facelift of the main ICE-powered model.
