Before the advent of the BMW 3 Series, the BMW 2002 was the Bavarian automaker’s most instantly recognizable model. It is still popular among collectors and tuners, although this specific example was crossbred with the Honda S2000 and may enrage purists.
The coupe rolled off the assembly lines in 1976 and was purchased for complete restoration by CATuned (California, USA) in 2010. The team repainted it in red, put 15-inch Rota wheels in the arches, installed Wilwood disc brakes, and overhauled most of the suspension using modern components.
It is still the engine bay that warrants the most attention in this build, of course. Found within is a Honda F20C inline-four with two liters of displacement – the same as in the S2000. Thanks to an added Garrett turbo, it produces 279 PS (275 hp / 205 kW) and 247 Nm (182 lb-ft) of torque, which a six-speed manual gearbox and an LSD deliver to the rear wheels.
The mileage is given as 175,000+ km (109,000 miles) after the swap, so it is anyone’s guess how much the car had covered in its first 34 years of use.
