BMW will demonstrate a fuel cell-powered version of its iX5 SUV at the IAA Mobility 2021 coming up in early September.
The hydrogen-electric conversion system implemented in the new model generated 170 PS (168 hp / 125 kW), while a 5th-gen BMW eDrive powertrain uses the power thus obtained to drive all four wheels with 374 PS (369 hp / 275 kW). A complete refill of the tanks takes between 3 and 4 minutes.
The company claims that it prints the radiator grille and individual body panels of the iX5 on 3D a printer, because there parts cannot be manufactured using traditional methods.
22-inch wheels come wrapped in special, nature-friendly Pirelli tires consisting of natural rubber and viscose derived from wood.
All visitors of the show will be able to request a test drive of the iX5 Hydrogen on a dedicated track between the exhibition pavilions in downtown Munich, Germany.
