BMW ushers in the 2nd-gen 4-Series Gran Coupe

The Bavarian automaker has just officially introduced a more practical and comfortable iteration of its 4-Series Gran Coupe, so let’s take a closer look at it.

Compared to its predecessor, the car is 150 mm (6 inches) longer and a bit wider/taller as well with some extra wheelbase length. Customers in the United States get to choose from two specs dubbed the 430i and the M440i xDrive. Both use the same eight-speed A/T, but the first makes do with a 2.0-liter turbo four-pot good for 255 PS (251 hp / 188 kW) and 401 Nm (296 lb-ft) of torque. It needs 5.8 seconds to reach 60 miles per hour (97 km/h).

The M440i xDrive takes advantage of its all-wheel-drive system and a 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine assisted by a 48-volt starter-generator. It produces 382 PS (377 hp / 281 kW) and 500 Nm (369 lb-ft) of torque, applying them to the ground to hit 60 mph in 4.4 seconds.

The second generation should handle better thanks to a lower center of gravity, while Lift-Related shocks supplied in all trim versions enhance control on particularly rough terrain. You can still go further than that and order adaptive M suspension. Standard features also include electronic driving aids, LED headlights, and 18-inch wheels.

Prices begin from U.S. $44,800 for the BMW 430i Gran Coupe and U.S. $58,000 for the M440i xDrive.
