BMW recognized as the world’s best-selling premium car brand

BMW has reigned supreme over premium automakers worldwide in 2021, selling the most cars and coming far ahead of its closest rival, Mercedes-Benz.

A total of 2.2 million cars with BMW badges found new owners last year, as opposed to just 2.05 million Mercedes-Benz ones. Mercedes sales actually dropped 5 percent even compared to the Covid-stricken 2020.

According to Carscoops, the Bavarian marque claimed leadership on the United States market as well, where it had to compete with Tesla. With 336,644 units sold in the USA, the company improved its 2020 result by 21 percent. Tesla came a close second with 20,000 fewer sold units.

Experts believe that the situation may revert this year considering the rapid growth of Tesla, which might end up dominating the North American market this year.

Lexus was another manufacturer to break through the 300,000-unit mark in the States with 304,475 units sold and 25% of them part-electric. Mercedes-Benz lagged behind with 276,102 units, a meager 0.4% improvement over 2020. Audi, the last one from the Big German Trio, barely managed to move 196,000 units.
