BMW found a new way to increase the capacity of the batteries for electric cars

German car maker BMW will soon change its hybrids and electric cars with a conventional lithium-ion batteries with liquid electrolyte in solid state batteries. It is noted that the revolutionary technology is already being developed, although in production models, it will be used not earlier than in ten years.

Due to the solid-state battery the power reserve of electric cars will be increased by 15-20%, and the weight and volume of the battery will be only reduced, that will allow to improve the bodywork of cars. Solid-state batteries are not so sensitive to temperature fluctuations, which is why they slowly lose charge and have a long service life.

Thanks to absence of a liquid electrolyte there is no probability of leak of harmful substances, the procedure of utilization is simplified, inflaming of the accumulator (for example in a case of accident) will also not happen. Moreover, solid-state accumulators will find the place and in hybrid power plants, that will allow to reduce the expenditure of combustible fuel to 30-35%.

The single minus of such batteries, which does't allow to equip all electric cars with them today,  consists in their high cost. Experts of BMW intend to solve this problem in the nearest decade. However, lithium - ion batteries with a liquid electrolyte evolve too. Their next generation will appear  in the electrical BMW X3 and MINI cars in 2018.
