New BMW 5-Series sedan gives birth to the Power BEV Concept

BMW has revealed the Power BEV, a purely electric SUV concept it built using the latest 5-Series sedan/saloon as a starting point. The car comes powered by three new-generation motors that produce 720 hp (537 kW) working together.

According to the company, the engineer teams that designed the undercarriage and the powertrain worked in close cooperation to ensure excellent performance and steering. As a result, the car needs less than three seconds to accelerate to 100 km/h (62 mph).

The model comes with a new torque control system, which should be able to send up to 100% of torque to each of the rear wheels even during extreme stunt driving. The installed battery is rated at a comparatively modest 45 kWh.

The Power BEV itself won’t be making it into production, but the iX3 battery SUV scheduled for market release in 2021 may end up inheriting some of its traits.

A few days ago, BMW unveiled another prototype called the Vision M Next Concept. The car packed a 600-hp (447-kW) powertrain that consisted of a new turbocharged four-cylinder engine and two electric motors. Just like the Power BEV, The Vision M Next is a pure design study, meaning that the company will use some of its tech for the new i8.
