BMW 5-Series Touring exterior previewed via patent pics

A leak from the UK Intellectual Property Office has shed light on the exterior design of the next BMW 5-Series wagon, Motor1 reports. Note that the images showing the the car were submitted to two separate categories, 'Cars' and 'Toys', which may mean that BMW is planning a toy car series based on its new family hauler. The premiere date is still unannounced.

Insofar as we can see, the front fascia stays the same. The radiator grille and the headlights correspond to those of the sedan, and the bumper design suggests that the trim level pictured here is fairly low.

In its next design iteration, the Touring will get a slanted roofline, a rising waistline and something like the Hoffmeister kink. The rear overhang appears rather elongated, but the tailgate design helps it look sporty. Each taillight is divided into two sections – one on the tailgate, the other one on the quarter panel.

In all likelihood, the 5-Series Touring will borrow its engine lineup from the sedan. This includes both mild and plug-in hybrids. That said, it remains to be announced.
