BMW says its future drivers will drive with AR glasses on

The Bavarian automaker has come to this year’s CES expo with a whole number of promising technologies it said it planned to implement in mass-market vehicles.

For the past few years, the company has been working on integrating augmented reality (AR) devices into car handling. Recently, the engineering team has succeeded in implementing a stable and consistent AR experience in a road-legal car. Drivers willing to put on AR glasses for the trip may get extra navigation direction linked to real-world objects, warning messages, and parking hints. They can also use the glasses to watch entertainment media while parked.

Before the end of the year, BMW plans to improve the functionality of its voice assistant thanks to artificial intelligence assisted by generative AI models. The current version runs on Amazon Alexa platform. Its next major update will enable it to communicate with the human occupants of the car in a more natural way.

As for the entertainment features, BMW already ships its cars with preinstalled casual games. Until now, these games required a smartphone as a controller for inputting commands. An update is coming to this system as well that will introduce traditional console gamepad support. It will officially debut with the ninth version of the company’s infotainment OS, set to be released sometime later in 2024.
