2020 BMW 6 GT facelift spotted out in the open

The BMW 6 GT liftback came out in the summer of 2017 and is due a facelift in the second half of 2020. As evidenced by these photos, the manufacturer is already testing it on public roads.

The masking wrap does a decent job concealing fine detail, but the new headlight pattern is still visible, as are some other things. We expect the 6 GT to get the same chrome grille divider as the 3 and 7 Series, as well as a reshaped rear diffuser.

Inside, the multimedia system will likely be updated, too. However, the most extensive upgrade will probably concern the engine range.

The latest-gen 6 Series (see video) ships with two gasoline engines to choose from: 2.0L @ 258 hp / 192 kW, 400 Nm / 298 lb-ft, and 3.0L @ 340 hp / 254 kW, 450 Nm / 332 lb-ft. It also offers a selection among three diesels: 2.0L @ 190 hp / 142 kW, 400 Nm / 298 lb-ft, 3.0L @ 265 hp / 198 kW, 620 Nm / 457 lb-ft, and 3.0L @ 320 hp / 239 kW, 680 Nm / 502 lb-ft.

However, the technically similar 5 Series additionally has access to a hybrid powertrain (530e) that consists of a gasoline turbo-four engine (2.0L, 252 hp / 188 kW, 420 Nm / 310 lb-ft), an electric motor and a 12-kWh battery. It offers between 55 and 66 kilometers (34 – 41 miles) of all-electric range.

With this in mind, it seems possible that something like a ‘645e Hybrid’ might be announced based on the 745e powertrain. The latter one includes a 3.0-liter gasoline V6 engine and an electric motor that sum up for 394 hp (294 kW) and 600 Nm (443 lb-ft) of torque.

Another possibility exists that the 620d will become a mild hybrid based on a 48-volt starter-generator. A similar modification was announced for the 5 Series earlier today (we reported).

However it is, the refreshed BMW 6 GT won’t be fully unveiled until the second half of 2020.
