These photos showing the restored and modernized BMW 740i (E38) have recently become the center of our attention. The car gained a whole new engine alongside with new features and drivetrain improvements.
Strictly speaking, a restomod is usually a vehicle that is at least 30 years old, restored and brought up to date with the hottest aftermarket parts and accessories. Issued in 1994, this particular sedan isn’t quite as old, and some of its upgrades stem from a 2007 740i, so they aren’t exactly “modern”, either. But hey, we like the end result, so who cares!
The door of the custom BMW 740i E38 opens to reveal a new sports steering wheel, an M5-style odometer, a CIC infotainment system dominated by a huge 10-inch display, and an iDrive controller. The changes don’t quite end there, though.
The owner of the sedan ditched its stock 4.4-liter V8 engine in favor of a much better BMW S62 mill that produces 400 horsepower (300 kilowatts) in its stock form. He went on to add a rear diff lock, a new six-speed manual gearbox with a miniature gear selector, and a supercharger. As a result, the car now possesses a healthy 560 hp (418 kW).
Among other things, he also rebuilt the suspension with the help of Bilstein shock absorbers and H&R springs.
In a clear move against the established tradition, the tuner left both the exterior and the cabin of the car in their near-stock state. In fact, he never even bothered to install a set of aftermarket wheels. Well done!
