Next-gen BMW 7 Series rumored to have a BEV version

Rumors persist that the new BMW 7 Series, which is most likely due in 2021 or 2022, will ship an optional all-electric powertrain. If true, this would mean quite a technological breakthrough for the premium sedan/saloon.

Media sources spreading this bit of speculation quote the latest report published by the Bavarian manufacturer. The report indeed mentions the 7 Series going fully electric. This is also in line with the company’s previously declared intention to drop the V8 and V12 engine support in the 7 Series, replacing both with hybrid powertrains.

The battery-powered 7 Series will allegedly be called the i7. Its battery capacity is currently estimated between 80 and 120 kilowatt-hours, meaning up to 700 kilometers (435 miles) of driving range in the top trim. As far as the performance is concerned, the top trim is expected to deliver at least 650 horsepower (485 kilowatts) to all four wheels.

The above notwithstanding, the internal combustion engines BMW will be offering for its updated 7 Series will likely pack quite a punch, too. The six-cylinder gasoline engine version is expected to produce 560 hp (418 kW) along with 800 Nm (590 lb-ft), if not more.

We will not know the truth until much closer to the premiere in 2021 or 2022, though.
