BMW has never offered an M variant of the 7-Series before, but Autocar believes this may finally happen in the next generation, which is expected to get an electrified V8 like the upcoming M5 and XM models.
According to the latest information, the engine will be capable of around 750 PS (740 hp / 552 kW), making the cars it powers the marque’s most powerful production vehicles ever, not counting one-off tuning projects. A traction battery sized at 20 kWh may lend such a plug-in hybrid over 80 km (50 miles) of purely electric range.
Another electric 7-Series, the i7 sedan, is also set to receive a high-performance modification. Called the i7 M60, it will pack dual electric motors with 612 PS (603 hp / 450 kW) at their disposal. This should result in a sprint time lower than four seconds and a top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph) or slightly lower.
Ever since the E32 generation, the flagship spec in the 7-Series has been shipping with a V12 under the hood. These specs used to be called “750” and “760”. In the latest generation, such a car also exists and is called “M760”, but it is not considered a true BMW M vehicle.
