Watch a BMW 740d smash through 250 km/h on a public road

The new BMW 7-Series looks massive and menacing with its oversized grille, but it is also a highly capable and practical car, as this video by AutoTopNL proves.

This particular ride is a 740d spec powered by a 3.0-liter inline-six diesel assisted by a 48V starter. An eight-speed A/T drives all four wheels with a combined 300 PS (296 hp / 221 kW) and 670 Nm (494 lb-ft).

On a German speedway with no speed restrictions, the vehicle can be seen going 0-97 km/h (0-60 mph) in 5.8 seconds and proceeding quickly to its speed cap of 250 km/h (155 mph). It actually manages to go a bit faster than that. If you ever wondered what a diesel engine sounded like at this kind of acceleration, make sure to check out the video.
