BMW extends rights on the М7 trademark

German premium car manufacturer BMW has successfully applied for the re-registration of the M7 trademark which it had initially planned to use for performance vehicles.

The previous license was issued by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and entitled BMW to use the M7 product mark in 2012 through 2018. The license expired on April 24, 2018, but the manufacturer didn’t apply for re-registration until April 27. In theory, this meant that any private person or legal entity could claim the mark for themselves, but no one did.

A popular rumor had it that the M7 series would kick off with a high-end performance sedan based on the BMW 7 Series. The management of the company later denied it, stating that the BMW 7 Series already includes such high-end entries as the Alpina B7 and the BMW M760i, so there simply isn’t enough of a market niche to squeeze a new model in.
