BMW M850i special edition harkens back to the series’ roots

BMW arrived at this year’s Monterey Car Week with a nostalgia-inducing M850i Edition M Heritage. Dedicated to the E31 8-Series from 1990–1999, it will go on sale in the United States in five retro finish options priced from $130,400.

Aside from a regular Bright Red finish, customers are choosing from four metallic tints including Mauritius Blue, Cosmos Black, Oxford Green and Daytona Violet. 20-inch Orbit Grey wheels and a carbon-fiber top adorned with a BMW M stripe are also included.

The black leather interior houses M Sport seats and more carbon accents all around. A Bowers & Wilkins Diamond audio system comes standard, and each car out of the planned 500 production units comes with a unique serial number plaque.

BMW hasn’t said anything about the powertrain. The current 8-Series, which this retro special edition is based upon, makes use of a 4.4-liter, twin-turbo V8 dialed up to 530 PS (523 hp / 390 kW). The transmission is eight-speed automatic.

The first examples will be assembled in late 2025, but the deliveries won’t begin until early 2026.
