BMW will be permanently discontinuing yet another of its models – the all-electric i3 hatchback – but the timeframe remains unknown.
In a recent news, the Bavarian automobile giant announced its intention to bring the i8 electric sports car out of production. Now it seems like the i3 will share the fate of its big brother.
The company admits it still doesn’t have any specific replacement in mind for the model, but hopes that it won’t be much of a loss in view of the entire BMW lineup going electric in the next several years. It points out that the i3 and i8 were created and put into their own, new ‘i’ range specifically so that people could learn to understand and appreciate the idea of battery-powered BMW vehicles. The decision was logical at the time, but that time is now over.
The above may make good sense, but it does nothing about the fact that the i3 is actually quite popular on the market. Over 150,000 units have been sold since its launch in 2013, including around 25,000 this year alone.
