Rumor: BMW working on an affordable i1 EV

The Bavarian carmaker plans to introduce a small and wallet-friendly electric car in 2027 that will serve as a replacement of sorts to the i3 model (in the gallery here). The report comes from Bimmer Post quoting inside sources.

Allegedly, the car will be based on the Neue Klasse platform currently still in development, and will be called the i1. Later on, a pricier alternative dubbed the i2 is expected to emerge as well.

In all likelihood, it will be a hatchback, although sedan remains a borderline-viable alternative. The source believes it will go on sale in the fall of 2027, followed by the i2 EV a year later. The latter could be a coupe, a sedan or even a compact van.

BMW plans to equip all new electric cars with innovative traction batteries it is currently working on. The battery pack will also make it into the new coupe-like crossover coming to replace the X4.
