BMW i4 disappoints with lackluster moose test performance

The Spanish team of km77.com has conducted a series of sudden obstacle evasion tests (so-called moose tests) of the all-electric BMW i4. The cheapest single-motor version of the liftback was the only one to have passed the trial, coming 1 km/h behind even the clumsy BMW iX and far behind all Tesla cars.

The test driver had originally attempted the test at its main qualifying speed of 77 km/h (47.8 mph). All cars capable of avoiding an obstacle in the road and returning back into lane without hitting any traffic cones are considered the winners of the test. The i4 showed some excessive oversteering and failed to get back on course when required, failing that attempt.

The team then proceeded to try different speeds and drive modes as shown in the video, but never scored any higher than 73 km/h (45.4 mph). The five-door liftback invariably ended up crashing into cones going faster.

In the end, the pilots said they found the suspension soft enough and the steering responses just about fast enough, but still no match to the ‘uncompromisingly direct and straightforward’ handling of Tesla cars. Both the Model 3 and Model Y were able to finish the test with flying colors at 80+ km/h (50+ mph).
