You can steer the electric BMW i5 with your eyes

BMW has shared some photos of its i5 prototype cars and revealed an intriguing new assist feature these cars will ship with. A special camera will be used to track the driver’s eye movements and interpret them as actions that the assist system will be able to carry out automatically.

Called Highway Assistant, the feature relies on new hardware and includes an interior camera with eye tracking capabilities. The driver can, for instance, order the car to change lane by looking in the appropriate rearview mirror. The car will switch on the turn indicator, adjust the speed and rotate the steering wheel.

The feature will be available as a paid option across the entire new 5-Series range, including both electric and ICE models.
