BMW i5 Touring EV spotted on the road

The recently introduced BMW 5-Series sedan is getting ready to welcome its estate counterpart, as evidenced by these spy shots posted on Motor1.

The car is an all-electric i5 Touring version. The front end is virtually identical to that of the sedan and thus barely disguised. As you can see, the radiator grille has vertical bars, meaning it’s probably a low-end trim – BMW M uses a distinct grille pattern. The brake lights overlapping the tailgate appear to have been revised slightly, but the overall styling is unchanged.

In all likelihood, the i5 Touring will use the same motors as its sedan sibling. The i5 eDrive40 has a single motor driving the rear wheels with 340 PS (335 hp / 250 kW) and 430 Nm (317 lb-ft) of torque. The i5 M60 xDrive is a flagship spec utilizing two motors for a combined 601 PS (593 hp / 442 kW) and 820 Nm (610 lb-ft) heading to all four wheels.

With a battery size of 81.2 kilowatt-hours, the i5 has around as much range as the range-topping i4 liftback. Specifically, the manufacturer promises between 516 and 582 km (320 and 361 miles) for the i5 sedan. The Touring weighs more and will therefore cover a bit less ground per charge.

The premiere date remains unknown.
