BMW has complemented its already-extensive art car lineup with an electric saloon called the Flow Nostokana. Essentially a i5 with a trick finish, it wears the company’s innovative electronic pigment capable of displaying or concealing graphics and changing hue.
A similar livery was worn by an experimental BMW 525i back in 1991, which this car can be considered a modern version of. Both were designed by Esther Mahlangu, an artist from South Africa, who pieced the livery together from 1,349 electronic film bits.
You can see the individual film patches on the hood, the roof, the trunk and the sides. Millions of microscopic capsules contained within the material can change their molecular structure when subjected to electric current, essentially changing the look of the entire car. What’s even more impressive, every tiny bit of film can be controlled separately from the rest.
