According to InsideEVs, BMW AG board chairman Pieter Nota voiced an opinion that the company would soon outperform Tesla in electric car sales. Does that sound realistic to you?
BMW CEO Oliver Zipse also pointed out that the company was going all-out construction new industrial capacities to produce eco-friendly vehicles. He stressed that, unlike some other car marques, BMW was in no hurry to proclaim itself an all-electric carmaker. The required infrastructure is still lacking in some countries, making a decisive switch to EVs premature at best. According to Zipse, in order to keep their customer base, automakers would have to be flexible about their offers in the coming years.
If you thought something didn’t add up, you might be on to something. BMW officially expects to be able to sell 200,000 EVs in 2022. Tesla has already moved 310,000 cars in the first quarter alone, and is looking forward to over a million units sold in 2022. Other automakers show no signs whatsoever of being capable to surpass those results.
In the meantime, however, BMW continues expanding its all-electric vehicle lineup. The i4 liftback has recently gone on sale, the i7 flagship (see video) debuted earlier today, and the iX SUV keeps getting more popular worldwide. Other electric premieres expected soon include the sedan-bodied i5 and the Mini Countryman.
