BMW has patented specially designed image projectors destined to replace the conventional side mirrors and at the same time not exhibit the flaws inherent in video cameras used by other recent cars.
The projectors still rely on video cameras to capture the road situation behind and around the car, but rather than outputting the result onto the dashboard, they project it onto side windows. As a result, drivers do not get fatigued from constantly having to fight the reflex of looking into side mirrors, because the target display area remains the same.
The principle is the same as the one used in heads-up displays projecting image onto the windshield. You can even adjust image brightness, which should be particularly useful in the dark. An added benefit is that the conventional side mirrors can be permanently removed, enhancing the overall aerodynamic profile of the car.
The only apparent downside is the need to keep one part of the side window raised at all times.
This would not be the first time BMW looked into ways of getting rid from mirrors: the company revealed the i8 Mirrorless Concept five years ago, and you can take a closer look at it in our gallery and the video if you missed the premiere.
