BMW to phase out IC engine production in Munich

The Bavarian automaker claims it will be assembling at least one EV at each of its factories in Germany, and the launch of a new electric car assembly line in Munich will mean no more internal combustion engines will be produced there.

The company expects to move its V8 and V12 production lines from its main factory to Austria, where it will rent Magna Steyr manufacturing sites. A plant in Hams Hall, England, will handle the four- and six-cylinder mills.

The electric BMW i4 sedan will start rolling off the lines in Munich next year. The recently introduced BMW iX SUV (see video) will go into production in Dingolfing along with the electrified 5 and 7 Series. The battery-powered X1 crossover will emerge a year later in Regensburg, and a new factory in Hungary, which is still under construction, will make EVs based on a brand-new platform starting from 2025.
