Hydrogen-powered BMW iX5 makes its IAA Munich debut

BMW has come to the IAA Mobility expo in Munich, Germany with a conceptual take on the iX5 lacking its usual 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 rated at 625 PS (616 hp / 460 kW). Instead of burning gas, the SUV runs on fuel cell power.

The company admits that it prioritized efficiency over raw performance in this project, hence the comparatively low output: 170 PS (168 hp / 125 kW).

According to BMW, battery cars will be able to coexist efficiently with fuel cell cars in the future as long as there is enough infrastructure around. With a global network of hydrogen stations, refueling a car like this iX5 would take four minutes at most.
