BMW announces iX top spec, color switch tech

BMW will unveil multiple new technologies at the impending CES show in Las-Vegas. According to Cnet, these include a color change feature that will enable owners to alter the way their vehicles look at a single push of a button.

Other highlights include the sporty M version of the all-electric SUV, iX, as well as a mysterious ‘ultra-modern car cinema’. Cnet does not reveal any further details.

The original battery SUV was released this summer – take a closer look at it in our gallery if you haven’t already. It is currently shipping in two variants, xDrive40 and xDrive50, the latter having 523 PS (516 hp / 385 kW) and sprinting 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in just 4.6 seconds.

At the CES show, the Bavarian automaker will reveal the range-topping spec called M60. In this guise, the iX could be able to churn out more than 600 horsepower (450 kilowatts) and sprint in four seconds flat. It could also feature exterior and chassis tweaks to differentiate it from the entry specs. Autocar believes the same powertrain may later make its way under the hull of the first electric Rolls-Royce, the Spectre.

No specifics are available on the scientific principle behind the color changing mentioned above. This would not be the first time BMW experimented around with color, though. A while ago, the company revealed an experimental X6 coupe-SUV wearing Vantablack, the world’s blackest paint.
