BMW iX performs worse than its Korean rivals at moose dodging

Spanish publication km77.com has revealed the outcomes of a number of moose tests performed with an all-electric BMW iX. The crossover passed the trial at 74 km/h (46 mph) and ranked below the Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6, as well as the Tesla Model Y.

The crew decided to start with a run at 80 km/h (49.7 mph), since the driver did not know what to expect from the car. It ended up plowing into traffic cones really badly at the first lane swerve, though, so the driver slammed on the brakes and abandoned the attempt.

He then made a single clean run at 74 km/h (46 mph), and the team proceeded to try and improve upon this result – to no avail. All drivers reported that the handling of the iX on the road did not feel intimidating or dangerous in any way, but its sheer weight in excess of 2.5 metric tons (5,500 lbs) made passing the test impossible at higher speeds. Apparently, the OEM tires were also to blame for the failure, not being sticky enough to counterbalance the sheer mass and inertia of the car.

The vehicle tested was an xDrive40 spec rated at 326 PS (321 hp / 240 kW) with 21-inch wheels shod in Pirelli PZero Elect tires.

To put things into perspective, the Ioniq 5 passed the test at 80 km/h (49.7 mph), while the technically related Kia EV6 managed 78 km/h (48.5 mph).
