Video: BMW iX meets X7 M50i in a future-versus-past battle on the drag strip

Like many other automotive brands, BMW is actively pushing electric cars into the mass consciousness. The iX SUV sits at the pinnacle of the still young EV lineup from Bavaria, previewing the future of electric transportation. But how does it compare against the gas-powered BMW X7 M50i?

Before you hit Play, let’s run down the specifications. The X7uses a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 capable of 537 PS (530 hp / 395 kW) and 750 Nm (553 lb-ft) of torque. The q=drive is on both axles.

In turn, the iX 50 makes use of dual electric motors summing up to 530 PS (523 hp / 391 kW) and 765 Nm (564 lb-ft) of torque in an AWD configuration. This makes it very close to the X7 on paper.

One may think weight will kill off the iX, but the rivals actually weigh about the same: the EV tips the scales at 2,520 kg (5,555 lbs), while the 7-Series comes in at 2,490 kg (5,490 lbs). In other words, there is no clear favorite here, not by a wide margin.
