A recent video by Carwow pits a BMW X7 in a tug-of-war contest against an all-electric iX model. The fight was tough, and a third combatant entered it at some point, but there was still only one winner in the end.
Starting with the crowd favorite, the BMW iX hits all four wheels from 523 PS (516 hp / 385 kW) and 765 Nm (564 lb-ft) of torque coming from dual motors. It weighs in at 2,510 kilograms (5,533 pounds).
Its rival is an X7 M50i spec that makes nearly identical 530 PS (523 hp / 390 kW) and 750 Nm (553 lb-ft) of torque. As an ICE car, it lacks the ability to unleash all of its torque straight from the launch, but it also weighs less at 2,490 kilos (5,490 lbs). More importantly still, it is rated for 3.5 metric tons (7,700 lbs) of towing capacity, much more than the 2.5 tons (5,500 lbs) of the iX.
The test crew chose a grass lawn for the tug-of-war contest in order to prevent tires and transmissions from overheating. At first, both SUVs were on equal terms and were unable to force each other to budge no matter what. After a long stalemate, however, the X7 pulled forward and was able to win. Apparently, the iX skidded too much on the grass, flattening it and the soil underneath, which ultimately caused it to lose traction. A second attempt ended with the same result, but much sooner.
This is when a Mercedes-AMG G 63 made a surprise appearance. Being the strongest G-Class on the current lineup, it came equipped with three differentials and a four-liter V8 boosted to 585 PS (577 hp / 430 kW) and 850 Nm (627 lb-ft) of torque. Do you think it stood a chance against the X7? Watch and find out!
