The Bavarian automaker has successfully patented two designs that may take vehicle customization to a whole new level. Both talk about a specially constructed film that can be applied to the body and cabin of the car to change their color at a press of a button.
The first patent deals with an ‘electronic paper’ material infused with million of microscopic particles capable of changing color on-the-go as soon as they are subjected to electric current. The technology can be applied over the entire body of the car or its individual parts. The other patent discusses the methods proposed for applying such wraps and sealing them from damage.
It is unclear when such a feature may reach the mass market. That said, BMW has already demonstrated the tech on its iX Concept (see video).
