BMW announces cutting down its powertrain variety by 50%

BMW seems resolute to follow through with its promises of a smaller, more efficient lineup of cars: in the latest statement, the Bavarian company said it would only leave a half of the currently available powertrain choices on the market.

Specifically, only the most popular and demanded drive/transmission combos will be allowed to remain on offer, while the rest will be archived within the next four years.

To give you an example, the best-selling BMW X3 along comes with four drivetrains to choose from, including the all-electric iX3 shown in the gallery here. The company will reassess the demand for all four and only leave the drivetrains that are popular among its customers. Should the majority vote with their wallets for hybrid or all-electric, this will be the decisive reality of the X3 line.
