BMW restates its aversion to tinpot engines

BMW will not be putting low-displacement, high-boost engines with low cylinder count under the hood of its sports cars, CarBuzz reports quoting BMW M CEO Franciscus van Meel. He pointed out that, while some automakers believe size doesn’t matter, the Bavarian company begs to differ.

The latter could be a jab at Mercedes-AMG, whose C 63 sedan got landed with a turbocharged four-pot. It seems official now that BMW will not be using three- or four-cylinder engines in any of its sportier cars. For instance, even the M2 that just premiered this week (browse through our gallery if you haven’t already) touched down with a 3.0-liter straight-six mill boosted to 460 PS (454 hp / 338 kW) without any electrification. Rumors persist that the M2 will be the carmaker’s last non-electrified sports car, but even if confirmed to be true, it will likely not lead to any engine downsizing.

In earlier news, Audi came out with a similar statement. The company said it was planning to hybridize its entire Sport lineup, but was committed to putting at least five cylinders under every hood.
