Rumor: Next-gen BMW M2 stays away from AWD, cranks power up to 11

The G87 generation of the BMW M2 will not come out until late next year, but reports are already coming in that it will keep its RWD configuration while becoming stronger than ever.

While its larger counterparts – the M3 and M4 – are both available in RWD and AWD guises, the 2 Series will allegedly continue to make do without xDrive. The M240i spec, on the contrary, will ship with all four driven wheels by default.

In its next generation, the M2 will become a larger and heavier car, the rumor says. More interestingly, however, it also mentions a power boost to 490 PS (483 hp / 360 kW). If true, it would put the M2 in between the current-gen M3 and M4 and their Competition variants in terms of raw performance. The CSL modification may end up with more than 500 horses and an xDrive system to boot.

There is little doubt the coupe will make use of the same ZF eight-speed automatic as before, while its manual transmission may or may not continue to be available. The S58 3.0-liter inline-six turbo will be the same as on the M3, M4, X3 M, and X4 M.

The source claims BMW intends to keep the new M2 in production from December 2022 until early 2029.
