BMW M2 claims the title of the fastest compact on the North Loop

BMW has confirmed that its M2 Coupe has lapped up all of the Nürburgring’s 20.8 kilometers in 7 minutes 38.706 seconds, dethroning the Audi RS 3 as the fastest compact-sized sports car on that track.

It took the company a few months to prepare, and even when the car was brought to the ‘Ring, BMW still chose to keep waiting for the best possible weather. Two weeks later, it finally resolved to make an attempt. Piloting the completely stock M2 with an eight-speed automatic transmission was Jörg Weidinger.

The new M2 went into mass production in late 2022. It is larger and heavier than its predecessor, but also considerably more powerful. Its turbo six-cylinder produces 460 PS (454 hp / 338 kW) and 550 Nm (406 lb-ft) of torque.

The M2 facelift scheduled for release in 2024 is expected to add another 15 PS (15 hp / 11 kW) to the output.
