Redux ships the first out of 30 BMW M3 (E30) restomods

The first-generation BMW E30 M3 (produced between 1985–1992) is a timeless classic whose market value keeps increasing to this day. That said, all its advantages notwithstanding, many of us will find the engine of the German retro car lacking in power and its plasticky interior a bit too rough around the edges. Enter Redux, a British retro car restorer who plans to produce 30 BMW E30 M3 restomods and has shipped the first of them earlier today.

By default, the company enlarges the stock 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine to 2.5 liters, but you may also order it fitted with a turbocharger for a substantial power increase. The car featured in our gallery has the turbo add-on installed and produces a respectable 390 hp (291 kW) along with 529 Nm (390 pound-feet) of torque. Transmission choices include five- and six-speed manual, and there is a limited-slip differential on the rear axle for an added bit of traction.

In terms of modern tech, the restomod packs adjustable shocks, six-piston AP Racing brake calipers (four-piston in the rear), and a part-carbon body. So far, Redux fits the BMW E30 M3 with carbon bumpers, wheel arches, side sills and roof, and a carbon hood is in the works.

The interior of the vehicle uses generous amounts of fine leather and Alcantara, the latter even covering the center console, the doors and the ceiling. There are a few bits we would like to nitpick about, though. First, while the front seats are downright gorgeous, there is a primitive bench representing the rear row. Second, the digital dashboard does not go well with the otherwise retro-styled interior. Good old analog instruments might have looked better.

Still, good job all around! Redux calls the 30 cars the “initial batch”, which might mean that it will build more given enough market demand.
