Video: Six-speed manual transmission in an old BMW M3 CSL

The BMW E46 M3 came out in early 2000s and instantly ascended to the Bavarian automaker’s Hall of Fame as one of its most successful cars ever. Today, let us tell you about a highly unusual modification of the E46.

Aside from the main series, the manufacturer launched a limited-edition CSL series packing top-of-the-line equipment and specs. For all of its remarkable qualities, the CSL had one major flaw: its sequential transmission, called SMG, had a lousy temper and was a pain to maintain. And while you could order a regular E46 with manual gearbox, the CSL invariably came bundled with the lackluster SMG.

A British owner of the car decided to tackle the issue in the most radical way by transplanting the stick shift from the standard M3 into his CSL. The project culminated in a success, and media reporters have already had a chance to try the new gear out firsthand. It looks like it is a joy to drive! Watch the video for the details.
