The next-gen BMW M3 has been repeatedly spotted out in the streets lately, and now, a spy video has been uploaded where you can hear its turbocharged inline-six engine – the S58 – at work.
The M3 shares the powertrain with the sportier M versions of the X3 and X4. In its standard implementation, the S58 churns out 480 hp (358 kW) and 600 Nm (443 lb-ft) of torque. The range-topping Competition spec can do 510 hp (380 kW). The maximum torque remains the same, but is available throughout a wider RPM range.
The newcomer borrows its eight-speed automatic transmission and on-demand AWD system from the BMW M5, complete with the front axle uncoupling capability. It will also ship with manual gearbox, but this version will be RWD only.
An M3 CS might also appear in the lineup, boasting a stronger engine, special body kit, and revised suspension and steering. The previous generation of the CS spec had 460 hp (343 kW) and sprinted 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in 3.9 seconds.
