The next generation of the BMW M3 may stick to its petrol engine while getting a battery-powered M version, BMW Blog reports quoting its own sources. At the same time, the technically related M4 coupe will allegedly go all-electric.
The current BMW M3 lineup is expected to get a facelift sometime this year and stay in production until the spring of 2027. Its successor should arrive either in late 2027 or early 2028. The G84 generation will likely continue to utilize the S58 inline-six with three liters of displacement, which the company will improve to be Euro-7 compliant. The new eco standards enter into power in Europe in 2025.
Around the same time, BMW M plans to launch a new all-electric sedan on the Neue Klasse platform. The quad-motor powertrain for it has been in development and testing since summer 2022, as evidenced by i4 M50 liftback mules sighted on public roads. Since the company patented the model name “iM3”, it will most likely be used for the all-electric M3 sedan.
At the same time, BMW Blog warns that nothing points to the next M4 keeping its ICE powertrain. With the EV market cooling down, many manufacturers are reconsidering their production targets, and BMW may follow their example soon. We will not know for sure until later.
