In the latest video shared by BMW and featuring its M4 CSL coupe, the car smashes through the Bavarian manufacturer’s speed record at the Nürburgring, leaving the first-gen M4 GTS far behind.
The coupe lapped up the entire 20.8 kilometers of the legendary track in 7:20.207. If you would rather have the old 20.6-kilometer time still widely used to compare production car performance, it amounts to 7:15.677.
Seven years ago, the BMW M4 GTS Mk1 completed the shorter version of the track in 7:27.88. The new record comes ahead of even the Porsche 911 Turbo S and falls barely more than a second behind the Lexus LFA supercar with the Nurburgring Package installed.
Like in 2015, the winning vehicle was piloted by Jörg Weidinger, an experienced racing pilot, car tester and development engineer at BMW. He was able to hit 300 km/h (186 mph) during the lap, coming close to the OEM-rated top speed of 307 km/h (190.8 mph).
The BMW M4 CSL sheds nearly 100 kilos (220 pounds) of weight compared to the standard M4. It benefits from various suspension tweaks and a boosted engine. The interior offers two racing-grade bucket seats, and all electronic systems are optimized for track driving. Only 1,000 units will be made.
