BMW intends to complement its N63/S63 line of eight-cylinder gasoline engines with a new model called the S68. It will keep the dual turbochargers and the V-shaped layout while becoming smaller in terms of displacement volume.
According to unofficial sources, the S68 will be shipping with a permanent hybrid (electric) add-on. Furthermore, it is being specifically designed to work in tandem with an electric motor. Allegedly, this configuration will enable the Bavarian carmaker to pass the strictest emission tests.
The current N63/S63 engine lineup has 4.4 liters of displacement room, but the company will be cutting it down because of the extra taxation such cars are subject to in China.
The engine is expected to debut with the limited-edition BMW M5 CS in two or three years. We will be learning more after BMW formally introduces its facelifted M5 Competition.
