Sales of several BMW M models have been put on hold in the United States until at least February 2020 due to the newly discovered fault in the wiring.
The issue potentially concerns all M5 sedans produced between January and October 2019, coupes produced between February and October, M8 Coupe and Convertible series rolled out between June and November, and the marque’s two popular SUVs: the X5 M (June-November) and X6 M (late May – late November).
All these cars may have their transmission wiring cables aligned in a way that could cause the transmission to short circuit and drop into neutral. Reportedly, the authorized service personnel will be rewiring every affected car free of charge to guarantee complete safety. The sales will re-launch once the issue has been completely solved.
Note that this information stems from multiple affected dealerships, and no official statement has followed from BMW yet. It will likely follow soon, though, given that the relevant U.S. state authorities have also been notified of the problem.
