The current-gen BMW M5 is still very young at three years old, plus it had a mid-life refresh this summer. However, its 4.4-liter V8 TT looks downright antiquated compared to all the electrified solutions out there, even engine starters such as in the Audi RS6 Avant. The latest rumor claims things will drastically change in four years’ time.
According to the source, the new M5 will come with two electrified powertrains to choose between, the first one identical to that of the upcoming X8 M. A twin-turbo V8 paired up with dual electric motors will allegedly hit the ground with 760 PS (750 hp, or 559 kW). The peak torque should lie close to 1,000 Nm (738 pound-feet).
This isn’t all, however. The top trim will allegedly get three 250kW electric motors (one front, two rear) and therefore pack 1,020 PS of pure electric power.
The latest BMW M5 Competition can sprint 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in 3.3 seconds. If the numbers speculated above are true, its EV successor will manage the same in well under three seconds while having 700+ km (435+ miles) of range. The BMW iNext crossover scheduled for production in Dingolfing, Germany next year will likely lend it some of its cutting-edge tech.
